An observation

We always talk about how words matter. Which ones you use, how you arrange them, their connotations, and so on. So I was rummaging through the local library and I found a book with this on the back cover: The big, brawling story of lusty, physical men pressed hard against the sharp edge of life… [Read more…]

39 Picky Rules for Writing

March 17, 2009

Our trip to Blackfriars last weekend had me thinking of Dr. Cohen, so I thought I'd pass these along. For anyone who doesn't know him, Dr. Ralph Cohen taught English at JMU for roughly a million years (influencing thousands of young minds like myself) before 'retiring early.' After all, the Internets are proof that grammar, spelling, and coherent thought are alive and well, so no one needs great English instructors. Anyway, Ralph landed on his feet at Mary Baldwin, where he continues to lecture students on the evils of the passive voice in between dazzling them with his Shakespeare-boosted brain. Until I came through the door here, he was (by far) the best professor that I've ever had; no matter who I end up with here, he's guaranteed a top-three spot. He used to grade our papers with his 'Picky Rules,' and every time he'd find something wrong, he'd leave a little note with the number of whatever rule we'd broken. Despite everything I've done since then, he remains the main influence on how I write, and I'd like to share his rules with you.
